Overview

The Portable XRF Course provides users of portable XRF (pXRF) devices with basic radiation protection and radiation safety knowledge. This will allow participants to apply these principles in accordance with manufacturer's instructions in the safe use of pXRF devices.

Description

This course starts with the basics of radiation: What it is, its sources, types and properties (of x-rays), how it affects the body, and how we measure radiation exposure and personal doses.

Then, we'll focus on how we can keep radiation doses within limits and as low as reasonably achievable. Fundamental knowledge of the radiation protection strategies of time, distance, and shielding as applied to pXRF device use will provide the knowledge that allows you to keep your radiation doses within the dose limits.

Finally, we focus specifically on the pXRF device: recognising its components, safety features, optional accessories and how they are applied in the safe use of the device in routine and emergency situations.

Learning Outcomes

Identify the properties and hazards of x-rays, their biological effects and statutory dose limits.

Describe how the radiation protection strategies of time, distance and shielding are applied in the use of portable XRF devices.

State the safe work requirements when using portable XRF devices in standard applications and emergency situations.

Assessment

There is continuous assessment throughout the course. Within a module are quizzes to check content is understood prior to moving on to the next topic. At the conclusion of each module is a short randomised multiple-choice test. The pass mark of assessments is 70%.

While you work through quizzes and tests you are remotely proctored using your webcam under normal test conditions.
